Charles Dickens

S4C's Wedi 7 marks Dickens 200th Birthday with Ye Olde Bulls Head

February 4th will mark Charles Dickens’ 200th birthday, and to mark the occasion S4C’s entertainment program Wedi 7 visited Ye Olde Bulls Head Inn to explore our connection to the writer.

Dickens came to Anglesey shortly after Christmas 1859, to visit the Reverend of Llanallgo Church, Rev. Stephen Roose Hughes, who had been working tirelessly in the months following to help those affected by the Royal Charter disaster, a shipwreck which claimed the lives of more than 400 people.

Dickens published his glowing impression of the Reverend and his efforts along with his grim description of the site of the wreck in “The Uncommercial Traveller”, a journal which also includes a review of his time spent at Ye Olde Bulls Head Inn.

Despite visiting us over 150 years ago, Dickens remains with us at the Bull, with many of the rooms named for some of his most interesting characters, while the resident’s lounge holds a collection of his works for our guests to enjoy.
